Filling the Gaps, One Implant at a Time…
Dental implants are perfect for patients with one or more teeth missing. But what are they, exactly? Well, they’re essentially artificial tooth roots composed of titanium, secured into a patient’s jawbone to support an artificial but natural-looking replacement tooth. Due to the secure fusing of the dental implant into the jawbone (otherwise referred to as osseointegration), the treatment is permanent and serves as a wonderful long-lasting solution to missing teeth!
Am I a Good Candidate?
A patient must have adequate bone and healthy gums to be a suitable candidate for dental implants. Factors such as disease, cancer or diabetes may also influence whether the dental implant will successfully bond with the jaw. Your dentist will be able to properly examine you to determine if dental implants will be the best choice of treatment for you.
A dental implant procedure is often very successful. The duration of a full procedure will typically take 5 to 8 months, varying for every individual. In the primary phase, patients will be evaluated and will receive preparation such as bone grafting if required. In the second phase, the dental implant will be secured into the jaw. This usually takes 1-2 hours to complete. Patients typically heal over the four months following the procedure as the implants gradually bond with the jawbone. The replacement tooth is mounted onto the implant in the final phase of treatment.
